Homes on Church Street: The overall value of the project, including reimbursement from the Town of Blacksburg for $184,000 in site work, is approximately $1.2 million. Blacksburg Presbyterian Church donated the land for the project. In addition to providing the land, the church used income from its endowment fund to provide the roofs. Blacksburg United Methodist Church was able to raise $50,000 that went directly toward the foundation of these seven new townhomes. The project features two 1,500 square foot one-and-a-half-story units with first floor bedrooms and zero-step entrances, completely accessible for those with disabilities. There will also be five 1,500 square foot two-story interior units. All units will be Earthcraft- and Energy Star-certified for energy efficiency.
Christiansburg Duplex: Construction begins in April on Johnson Street, the site of our newest project. This location will become a duplex in Christiansburg . We have an exciting opportunity through Thrivent, a Christian financial group, who has generously offered a matching challenge grant of $55,000. This means that for every dollar we raise (up to $55,000) Thrivent will match, dollar-for-dollar. Your donations will be doubled! We are still working towards meeting this goal, so please reach out if you’d like to donate. We are currently searching for home-buyers for this location, so check out the Homebuyer section to find out more.
GTC Strikes Again: Giles Technical Center students are completing their fourth house! In the past, students have been responsible for completing the base construction and we then relocated the units to our foundations throughout the county, where Habitat crews completed them. This home will be relocated to Pearisburg, which is not too far from school. Now, for the first time, the students will be finishing the home that they started! The first step in completing the homes is roofing and shingling and next fall the students will return to finish the interior of the home. These skilled students will be working on the flooring, cabinets, light fixtures, painting walls and more! They will be partnering with our team to make this house move-in ready for our next homeowner. We are extremely grateful for the collaborative efforts from Giles Technical Center and appreciate the work that they do to support our mission. Construction is expected to be completed next fall and this home is currently for sale . If you are interested in becoming a homeowner please contact us!
At Habitat NRV, we are more determined than ever to continue building better communities through affordable housing. The pandemic has exposed the housing crisis we’ve been fighting since our inception, but what Habitat NRV continues to do best, is put equity into action at every level. Every donor, every volunteer and every ReStore donation helps us invest back into the New River Valley, and our need has never been greater.
