Aging in Place with HabitatNRV

Through our Critical Repair Network, HabitatNRV is helping older adults age at home in the New River Valley. Our local Habitat affiliate collaborates with human services organizations, including The Community Foundation of the New River Valley, to evaluate individual needs and provide repairs, modifications, and community services specific to each homeowner’s lifestyle to preserve their home and their independence.

The need

The need for HabitatNRV's work is immense: older Americans are one of the fastest-growing demographics in the country – by 2030,  the number of residents in the New River Valley aged 65+ is expected to double.
Currently, 50% of the region’s housing stock is 40+ years old and is ill-suited for those with declining mobility and the percentage of adult children providing personal care and/or financial assistance to a parent has more than tripled over the past 15 years.

Our impact

HabitatNRV's Critical Repair Network extends longevity and quality of life by providing community members the accommodations needed so they may safely age in place.

Safe and accessible housing is a key social determinant of health. As leaders in the housing community, HabitatNRV's Critical Repair Network advances both housing and health equity for older Americans in the New River Valley.

Let's make Aging in Place accessible to all in the New River Valley

Key campaign pillars

  • Many families in the New River Valley do not have adequate accommodations to safely Age in Place.

By 2030,  the number of residents in the New River Valley aged 65+ is expected to double. 50% of the region’s housing stock is 40+ years old and is ill-suited for those with declining mobility and the percentage of adult children providing personal care and/or financial assistance to a parent has more than tripled over the past 15 years.

  • Join HabitatNRV in creating safe and decent housing for all.

This year, our focus for Give Local 2024 is on raising funds to acquire a critical repair response unit, a mobile solution to address urgent home repair needs in the New River Valley. With this unit, we can swiftly respond to calls and travel to locations for critical repairs, enabling countless community members to age in place safely. Your contribution will directly impact the lives of residents, ensuring they have the support needed to maintain secure homes. Together, we can make a difference and build a stronger, safer community for everyone.
