Aging in Place with HabitatNRV

Through our Critical Repair Network, HabitatNRV is helping older adults age at home in the New River Valley. Our local Habitat affiliate collaborates with human services organizations, including The Community Foundation of the New River Valley, to evaluate individual needs and provide repairs, modifications, and community services specific to each homeowner’s lifestyle to preserve their home and their independence.
The need
-
The population of adults aged 65+ in the New River Valley is expected to double by 2030.
-
Over 50% of local housing is more than 40 years old—much of it not designed for aging safely, especially for those with reduced mobility.
-
In the past 15 years, the number of adult children providing care or financial support to aging parents has tripled.
-
Small issues—like a leaking faucet or clogged gutters —can quickly become dangerous without preventative maintenance.
Our impact
HabitatNRV's Critical Repair Network extends longevity and quality of life by providing community members the accommodations needed so they may safely age in place.
Safe and accessible housing is a key social determinant of health. As leaders in the housing community, HabitatNRV's Critical Repair Network advances both housing and health equity for older Americans in the New River Valley.
