More Than Just Repairs: Building Stronger Homes & Stronger Communities 🏠

A safe home can make a huge difference in a family’s life. Through Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley’s Home Repair Program and our partnership with the Town of Christiansburg, we’ve been able to help local homeowners make important repairs that allow them to stay safely, independently, and affordably in the homes they already own.

Since receiving funding from the Town of Christiansburg, Habitat has assisted 7 Christiansburg homeowners and completed 7 repair projects, investing $36,155.95 into critical repairs throughout the community.

These repairs have helped improve safety and accessibility while preserving existing affordable housing for Christiansburg residents. But the work doesn’t stop with the repair itself.

More Than Home Repairs

When a homeowner reaches out to Habitat, we look at more than just what needs to be fixed.

Our Home Repair Program works with income-qualified homeowners to address repairs that impact safety, accessibility, health, structural integrity, and long-term housing stability.

Throughout the process, Habitat works alongside homeowners, contractors, volunteers, and community partners to make these repairs possible. And when we see that a homeowner could benefit from additional support, we try to make a warm handoff to other resources in our community.

That can include organizations such as the Agency on Aging, New River Valley Community Services, Plenty!, Community Housing Partners, the Disability Resource Center, and Veterans Affairs. Our social worker also continues to connect with homeowners and help provide support, guidance, and resources when additional needs come up.

One Repair Can Make a Big Difference

One of the homeowners we were able to assist was a senior homeowner who reached out to Habitat after their front porch had separated from the house.

The damaged porch and steps created serious safety concerns and made it difficult for the homeowner to safely get in and out of their home. Their bathroom also wasn't handicap accessible, making everyday activities more difficult.

What Habitat Did

Our team removed the damaged concrete porch and front steps and installed a new wooden accessibility ramp with a small landing area.

We also added a small porch platform where the homeowner could safely sit and enjoy time outside.

Inside the home, we improved bathroom accessibility by installing grab bars and other safety features and provided accessibility aids, including a shower chair.

After

But while working with this homeowner, we also identified other challenges, including caregiver responsibilities, difficulty restoring Medicare and related benefits, fall risks, homeowners insurance concerns, and a need for additional aging-in-place resources.

This is where looking beyond the repair really matters.

A Warm Hand-Off

Habitat was able to help connect the family with benefits and Medicare navigation assistance, senior and aging services, caregiver support, home safety resources, and other community partners.

By connecting the homeowner with additional support, we were able to help create a safer situation for aging in place while also reducing some of the burden on their primary caregiver.

Helping a Family Build Stability

Another homeowner we worked with was a young first-time homeowner caring for three children. Like many new homeowners, keeping up with repairs and maintenance while managing the financial responsibilities of homeownership created additional pressure.

There were repairs needed throughout the home, including the bathroom, basement windows, and an exterior door.

What Habitat Did

Habitat replaced the deteriorating bathroom tub surround and seal to improve its functionality. We also replaced basement windows to improve safety, energy efficiency, and weather protection. The home's den exterior door was replaced as well, improving security and accessibility for the family.

A Warm Hand-Off

Again, the repairs were only part of the story. The family also had concerns about maintaining a safe environment for three children, managing future home maintenance, and protecting their long-term housing stability. Habitat was able to provide resource navigation and community referrals, information about family support services, connections to housing stability resources, and guidance for future home maintenance needs.

By looking beyond the immediate repairs, we were able to help reduce some of the barriers that can make homeownership difficult and support a safer, more stable home for this family.

These projects are about much more than replacing windows, building ramps, or fixing doors. They are about helping people stay in the homes they love. They are about making sure a senior can safely enter and leave their home. They are about helping a family maintain a safe place for their children.

And they are about making sure homeowners don't have to navigate every challenge alone.

Thanks to the support of the Town of Christiansburg, along with the work of our volunteers, contractors, community partners, and Habitat team, these seven homeowners have been able to make important improvements to their homes and their lives.

A safe home is the foundation for healthy families and strong communities — and we're grateful to be able to be a part of making that possible.
